The Learning Department offers a variety of activities for Sixth Form, College and University students. These can include sessions on Religion & Philosophy, exploring the Cathedral as a place of Christian worship, Q&A opportunities with Cathedral clergy, and architectural & artistic studies. In partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, we also run two events specifically aimed at Sixth Formers - the Find Your Voice public speaking workshop and the Speak Your Mind Sixth Form Debate.

Find Your Voice and Speak Your Mind

Find Your Voice workshops are aimed at helping Sixth Form students to develop skills and confidence in public speaking. As part of the event students are given support in structuring arguments and speech delivery, before having the opportunity to test their skills by debating in the unique Cathedral setting.

Now in its 22nd year, Speak Your Mind attracts over 350 students to the Cathedral to take part in debate on topical/political issues along the lines of BBC TVs Question Time. The panel for last year’s debate was Lord Adonis (Labour politician), Maswood Ahmed (Assistant Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain), Chris Dey (Conservative Councillor), Vicky Gosling (former RAF Group Captain and Invictus Games CEO) and James Tooley (Professor of educational entrepreneurship and education at the University of Buckingham). Once again, the debate was chaired by Quintin McKellar (University of Hertfordshire Vice Chancellor).

By attending these events, Sixth Formers can:

  • Develop skills in public debate and listening
  • Interact with pupils across a range of local schools
  • Support post-16 citizenship/politics curriculum
  • Support university applications/personal statements

The date for this years Find Your Voice workshops and Speak Your Mind Sixth Form Debate will be confirmed in due course.

This was our first time at the conference and we were very impressed. It was an excellent event which our students thoroughly enjoyed.
