The Learning Department offers a variety of activities for Sixth Form, College and University students. These can include sessions on Religion & Philosophy, exploring the Cathedral as a place of Christian worship, Q&A opportunities with Cathedral clergy, and architectural & artistic studies. In partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, we also run two events specifically aimed at Sixth Formers - the Find Your Voice public speaking workshop and the Speak Your Mind Sixth Form Debate.

Find Your Voice and Speak Your Mind

Find Your Voice workshops are aimed at helping Sixth Form students to develop skills and confidence in public speaking. As part of the event students are given support in structuring arguments and speech delivery, before having the opportunity to test their skills by debating in the unique Cathedral setting.

Now in its 21st year, Speak Your Mind attracts over 450 students to the Cathedral to take part in debate on topical/political issues along the lines of BBC TVs Question Time. Past speakers have included Baroness Sal Brinton, Bim Afolami MP, The Right Reverend Dr Alan Smith and BBC news presenter Samira Ahmed. A similar high quality panel is anticipated for this year.

By attending these events, Sixth Formers can:

  • Develop skills in public debate and listening
  • Interact with pupils across a range of local schools
  • Support post-16 citizenship/politics curriculum
  • Support university applications/personal statements

The date for this years Find Your Voice workshops are Friday 11th and 18th October.

The date for this years Speak Your Mind Sixth Form Debate is Thursday 21st November.

This was our first time at the conference and we were very impressed. It was an excellent event which our students thoroughly enjoyed.
