The Learning Department runs a number of Art and Craft based activities suitable for most Key Stages, which draw inspiration from the beautiful Cathedral building. These include Clay Tiles, Roman Mosaics, Stained Glass, Brass Rubbing and Illuminated Lettering. At the end of each workshop, all children will have produced a piece of art to take back to school with them. Most schools combine a workshop with one of our trails - contact a member of the Learning team to find out more.

Clay Tiles

The Cathedral has been full of clay tiles since the Medieval times and, drawing inspiration from the signs, symbols and architecture in the building, this workshop gives pupils a chance to create one of their own.

Roman Mosaics

Alban would have been very familiar with the mosaics of Roman Verulamium and, having looked at examples of some of these, this workshop gives pupils the chance to create an example of their own.

Stained Glass

The Cathedral is full of stained glass, from Nativity windows in the Lady Chapel to the awe-inspiring Rose Window in the North Transept. Having explored and leant about some of these, pupils then have a chance to make a window of their own.

Brass Rubbing

The Cathedral is home to many Medieval Brasses, including the stunning brass of Thomas De La Mare and, in this workshop, pupils have the chance to explore some of there before making a brass rubbing of their own.

Illuminated Lettering

In Medieval times, many illuminated manuscripts were produced in St Albans Monastery. In this workshop, pupils learn about the skills, techniques and materials used to make these, before creating an illuminated letter of their own.
