On Sunday 14 June we marked a significant anniversary in the life of our Cathedral Choir as we celebrated 30 years of girls singing at the Cathedral.

We were delighted to welcome some 45 former choristers back to join us for the occasion. It was moving to see many generations of singers gathered together, and to give thanks for all that the girls’ choir has contributed to the worship and musical life of this place over three decades. The service included the premiere of O sing unto the Lord, written for the occasion by Andrew Parnell, the founding director of the girls’ choir.

Later in the service we enjoyed rousing music by Stanford, Parry, Dyson (conducted by Dr Barry Rose OBE, during whose tenure as Master of the Music the choir was formed) and Jeanne Demessieux.

Director of Music, William Fox, said,

"We are delighted to have our girl choristers at the heart of our musical life and look forward to their work over the next 30 years and beyond."

Dean Jo added,

"It was a joy to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Cathedral Girls Choir and to welcome back to the Cathedral Ex Choristers and music staff.  Now girls and female lay clerks are firmly part of The Cathedral Choir and we give thanks for that decision which paved the way for girls and boys to bring their vocation of music to the life of our Cathedral."
