Crossing the Waters A concert of spoken word and live music, jointly hosted by St Albans Cathedral Education Trust and St Albans Cathedral Music Trust. Crossing the Waters is presented and performed by The Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu van Furth and Pete Letanka. Mpho Tutu van Furth is a South African Anglican priest, author and daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his widow, Leah. Pete Letanka is a jazz pianist, composer and educator. Together they present a scripted conversation punctuated with live music. The two performers both have South African heritage and share stories and experiences of themselves, their families and the unique perspective this has given them. In a 75-minute performance, they explore the ideas of identity, responding to the past and ways towards reconciliation. In between the stories are five compositions (by Abdullah Ibrahim and Pete Letanka) performed by a jazz trio (piano, double bass and drums) that illustrate the challenges and rewards of crossing the waters of perceived difference to find common ground.
