The Cathedral is seeking to recruit a full time Virger. The Virger team is an integral part of the Cathedrals’ front of house team, interacting on a daily basis with the congregation, clergy, volunteers, visitors, venue hire organisers, external contractors and other members of the general public. The Virger team are crucial to ensuring the smooth running of worshipping life at the Cathedral. Virgers are responsible for ensuring the Cathedral looks its’ best at all times and that it provides a safe and welcoming environment for all those who use it. They are responsible for the preparation of services, leading processions, operating the live-streaming equipment on Sunday mornings and at other special services, carrying out regular cleaning, working the internal PA system during services, setting up staging for events and on occasion being the first responder for unplanned activity such as alarms activation.

The Virger team reports directly to the Events & Visitor Experience Manager who has strategic oversight of all planned worship and other event activity on the Cathedral floor. This full-time position works alongside 4 other full time virgers and as such is part of a small, dedicated and friendly team. Part time hours would be considered for the right applicant. There will be times when the virger will need to work on their own.

The Virger team sets high standards for themselves and others in their presentation, attitude and commitment to the Cathedral. They need to be hardworking and flexible in their approach. The Cathedral is open seven days a week and has a very busy programme of worship, events and exhibitions with over 450,000 visitors in 2022. With the completion of the Welcome Centre, learning and heritage facilities, the virger team have a key contribution to make in helping to increase visitor footfall and supporting the congregation.

An understanding of church life would be helpful although not essential as full job training will be provided.
