At St Albans Cathedral, our volunteers are at the very heart of everything we do. During Volunteers’ Week, we have taken time to reflect on, celebrate and give thanks for the extraordinary contribution made by nearly 600 volunteers who support the life of the Cathedral in so many different ways.

From the moment visitors arrive, it is often a volunteer who offers the first welcome. Our guides and welcomers bring the Cathedral’s rich history to life, while stewards help ensure that services, events and daily activities run smoothly. Behind the scenes, volunteers support our administration, care for the building and its grounds, assist with education programmes, and help sustain the Cathedral as a place of worship, heritage and community.

Their dedication and generosity of spirit enable us to remain open, vibrant and accessible to all. Quite simply, the Cathedral could not function as it does without them.

As part of this year’s celebrations, we were delighted to invite our volunteers to a special Volunteer Evensong earlier in the week. This service offered a moment to pause and recognise the invaluable role they play in the life of the Cathedral, giving thanks for their time, commitment and faithfulness.

The celebrations continued on Saturday with a tea party held in their honour. It was a joyful occasion, bringing volunteers together to share conversation, laughter and a well-deserved moment of appreciation. The event provided a chance not only to say thank you, but also to celebrate the strong sense of community that volunteering at the Cathedral fosters.

Volunteering at St Albans Cathedral is about much more than giving time, it is about belonging to a shared endeavour. Our volunteers bring warmth, enthusiasm and care to all that they do, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming to visitors and worshippers alike. Many have been part of the Cathedral community for years, while others are just beginning their journey with us, but all contribute to the rich and varied life of this place.

Volunteers’ Week is a reminder of the importance of volunteering across the UK, but here at St Albans Cathedral, our gratitude extends throughout the year. Every conversation shared with a visitor, every hour given to supporting our work, and every task, big or small, makes a meaningful difference.

To each and every one of our volunteers: thank you. Your generosity, dedication and kindness help sustain the Cathedral as a place of prayer, welcome and inspiration for all.
