As Britain's first saint, Alban's story has shaped this Cathedral for centuries. For Creative Director Amie Bone and her team, that story provides the starting point for the entire festival. Rather than creating a series of floral displays, the ambition is to create a journey through the Cathedral that invites visitors to encounter Alban's story in new and unexpected ways. The design draws inspiration from the Cathedral itself: its architecture, history and atmosphere. From the vast scale of the Nave to the quiet reflection of the Shrine, each space offers opportunities to explore different themes through colour, texture and floral design. The soaring architecture, intimate chapels and sacred spaces of the Cathedral each lend themselves to different moments in the story, helping to shape the experience as visitors move through the building. Flowers will do more than fill the space. Through colour, form and texture, they will help create distinct atmospheres, draw attention to architectural features and guide visitors from one experience to the next. Familiar spaces will be seen in a new light as the Cathedral becomes both gallery and storyteller. The vision is still taking shape. Over the coming months, we will be sharing sketches, inspirations and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the creative process as ideas develop into installations and a Cathedral becomes a garden.
