Randomness doesn’t always have a good reputation among Christians. It’s often viewed as something chaotic, uncontrolled, or even a departure from perfection. For some, the idea that a powerful, purposeful Creator works through random processes — especially those central to evolution — can feel difficult to reconcile.

But what if randomness isn’t a flaw at all?

Join our Canon Scientist, Professor Russell Cowburn, beneath the awe-inspiring GAIA installation, as he invites us to rethink what randomness really means. Drawing on insights from physics, chemistry, biology and engineering, Professor Cowburn will reveal how randomness is not disorder, but an essential, powerful and beautiful part of God’s creation — driving creativity, complexity, and innovation throughout the natural world.

About Professor Russell Cowburn | Prof Cowburn is Professor of Experimental Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory of the University of Cambridge, where he researches nanotechnology and its application to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.  A Fellow of the Royal Society and Darwin College, he is also CEO of one of Cambridge’s technology companies and a trustee of the Faraday Institute of Science and Religion.  As a Christian, he actively engages with church groups to foster dialogue between science and faith.
