We are saddened at St Albans Cathedral to hear of the death of His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict, for whom we have been praying daily.

The Common Declaration signed between himself and the then Archbishop of Canterbury drew attention to what is shared between our churches, and has helped shape closer ecumenism between Roman Catholics and Anglicans over the years since. St Albans Cathedral has had a long time commitment to supporting our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers and was among the first Anglican Cathedrals in this province, now forty years ago, to welcome a weekly Roman Catholic congregation to worship here.

Our heartfelt sympathies, and an assurance of our prayers, are extended to the community here, in this Diocese, and to all who mourn the late Pope. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
