At St Albans Cathedral we have a long history of offering young people the opportunity of exploring life at the Cathedral. The scheme has been called a variety of things in the past, and now participants on the programme, supported by the Church of England’s Ministry Experience Scheme, are known as Alban Interns.

The interns engage fully in the life of the Cathedral, from playing key liturgical roles to helping with toddler groups, working as a virger, and touring with the choir. We are also grateful that interns are invited to experience other kinds of ministry and work in the church.

This week our interns, Izzy and Michael, ordinand on attachment, James, and Youth Chaplain, Fr Calum, were all invited to Luton Airport by the Chaplain, Liz Hughes. We were treated to a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the airport, and experienced first hand what chaplaincy looks like at an airport.

Our current interns complete their year at the end of July, and current intern Izzy says, ‘Being an intern has been such an amazing opportunity coming with so many unique experiences. How many people can say they’ve been up an air traffic control tower?!’
