Home Groups allow members of the congregation to study parts of the Bible or elements of the Christian faith in a relaxed and informal setting.

Not only do these Groups stimulate spiritual growth, they also help build Christian communities by enabling individuals to connect with each other and become friends and supports.

All these Groups are supported by the Cathedral clergy.  This support includes attending Group meetings when invited; bi-annual meetings with the leaders; on an on-going basis, assisting with questions that occasionally arise within a Group; and an annual summer get together, to date BBQs and a Tea Party.

The groups choose their own topics to discuss, save during Lent when they all discuss the Lent Booklet prepared by our Cathedral Clergy. They are supported by our Clergy with occasional visits and teaching. They meet throughout the year in the informal setting of individuals’ homes, a café, a pub, a care home or a room at the Cathedral.

There are currently 13 Home Groups all meeting within St Albans.

While each Group chooses the topic and material it is going to usee, all topics and material do relate to the Bible and Christian faith. The Groups vary in size from four to sixteen, but each meeting usually has four to twelve people attending. Some Groups meet in the morning, some in the afternoon and some in the evening; weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

One group specifically welcomes pre-school children and meets at 10.30 weekly post-school drop-off.

The Home Groups all recognise their key benefits include:

  • A comfortable environment in which to get to know other members of the congregation;
  • Spiritual growth with the opportunity to discuss the Scriptures;
  • The discipline of regular in depth Bible study;
  • Fun and mutual support.

The principles all members of the Home Groups seek to follow are:

  • We are all on a journey and nobody knows all the answers;
  • We respect each other’s views;
  • We express our own opinions with generosity and gentleness;
  • We give space for all to share their thoughts or remain silent, as each individual chooses;
  • We respect the confidentiality of any personal information that is shared.

"I am Dawn Knight, a regular member of the congregation.  With the support of Fr Will Gibbs (Canon for Mission and Pastoral Care), I help co-ordinate the Home Groups.  I am passionate about Home Groups, simply because I recognise their benefits.  They have kept my body and soul together over the last 40 years and have helped my faith grow rather than plateau or diminish.  Currently, there are 103regular Home Groups; there is always room for more.

As one Group leader said: “if you have space for half a dozen chairs, starting a Home Group is not too daunting a prospect and the clergy will be only too willing to give advice and encouragement"
