Johannes Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem between 1865 and 1868, probably inspired by the passing of his mother and Robert Schumann. The work, performed here in the original German, comprises seven movements with text assembled by Brahms himself, derived from the Luther Bible. The music features many choral and orchestral sections interspersed with soprano and baritone solos, often accompanied by the chorus and orchestra.
