A talk by Tim Moorey
As the evenings lengthen, and Christmas approaches, what better way to spend a light-hearted evening than in brushing up on your crossword technique? We are joined by Tim Moorey, a professional crossword setter, who sets puzzles for a wide range of publications including The Times, The Sunday Times, The Week, and The Sunday Telegraph. Tim is a consultant for Chambers Dictionaries, and judge for a monthly clue-writing competition organised by The Times. As well as running courses and workshops for adults and children, he has also written several books on the subject, including ‘How to Crack Cryptic Crosswords’(2018).
Crosswords are a particular and fascinating British institution, inspired by the complexity of the English language. Tim will explain how and why he became a crossword setter in his teenage years, and offer some amusing insights from his experience of doing so over the past fifty years. We expect he will also provide us all with some (much-needed?) advice on how to make a better job of tackling crosswords effectively ourselves.
This talk will take place in the Offa Room of the Cathedral Chapter House (formerly the Crypt), starting at 7.30pm.
If you would like to start the evening in a relaxed and convivial manner, places are available for up to 30 people to enjoy a two course meal plus drink with Tim before the talk, at Lussmanns Restaurant, Heritage Close, and this will start at 5.30pm. In the past, our Lussmanns parties have been a very enjoyable experience, providing an opportunity to socialise with members of the Friends and their guests. Please feel encouraged to join us!
Tickets: £9 (for lecture alone); £34 (for lecture plus supper).
Any queries, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Non-members of the Friends are encouraged to join us in supporting the Cathedral by making an additional voluntary contribution of £2.
