‘Few counties are as interesting as Herts’: Revising Pevsner’s Hertfordshire
A lecture by Dr James Bettley
Nikolaus Pevsner’s definitive guide to the buildings of Hertfordshire was published in 1953, with a second edition revised by Bridget Cherry in 1977. In 2019 a third edition is being published by Yale University Press, prepared by Dr James Bettley, who has already revised the volumes for Essex and Suffolk. It will be about twice the length of previous editions, with new colour photographs and many more maps and plans. In this talk, James will give us an introduction to the Buildings of England series and its place in Pevsner’s life, and explain what is involved in compiling the new edition, illustrated with examples of local Hertfordshire buildings.
A freelance architectural historian since 2000, Dr James Bettley has worked for the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum, and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He now lives in Essex, where he will be taking on the duties of High Sheriff from April 2019.
This lecture will take place in the Diocesan Board Room, Holywell Lodge, Holywell Hill, starting at 8.00pm prompt.
PLEASE NOTE that, if approved by the Friends’ 2018 AGM in September, the lecture will be preceded by the Friends’ 2019 AGM at 6.30pm. Attendance at the Annual Meeting is free to all Friends.
