Nave Screen Statues

Seven new statues of martyrs were brought to the Cathedral during Easter and in the following weeks will receive their finishing touches – particularly their exact colouring – and be installed in the niches of the nave-sanctuary screen. There will be a  formal dedication and an exhibition later this year.

The sculptor is Rory Young, who has been creating them for over five years in his Cirencester workshop. This is, we believe, the first time that polychrome statues have been restored to a medieval screen since the Reformation.

The statues are the gift of two very longstanding and generous supporters of the Cathedral, Richard Walduck, OBE, a former High Sheriff of Hertfordshire and Alderman of the City of London, and Susan Walduck, who has been a lay Canon of the Cathedral since 2003.
