July 2016: We are pleased to announce that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £3,872,900 for its development project Alban, Britain’s First Saint: Telling the Whole Story.  With this grant, the Cathedral now has the permissions and funds in place to make their transformational project a reality.

March 2016: Following a two year development phase, St Albans Cathedral submits a Round 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund in support of 'Alban, Britain's First Saint'. A successful application will unlock £4m in funding towards this transformational project. 

March 2016: Individuals who joined 'Alban's Angel' are invited to collect their angel from the Cathedral's Development Office throughout March during business hours (9.00-16.30), Monday to Friday. The Development Office is located in the Deanery, which is down the drive way to the left of the Chapter House.  

Feb 2016: The Alban's Angels have finally descended from their angel clouds as Lent begins in the Cathedral. WIth a total of 550 angels donated, together we have raised over £34,000 towards the Alban, Britain's First Saint project! Our thanks go to everyone who has joined. Jan 2016: Our 500th Angel has joined this month helping us to raise over £30,000 towards the Alban, Britain's First Saint project. The Alban's Angels appeal closes shortly, but if you would still like to support it and dedicate an angel you can click here until 9th February when the five angel clouds will descend.

Dec 2015: The Wixamtree Trust gets behind Alban, Britain's First Saint with a very generous grant. Thank you to the Trust for their continued support.

Oct 2015: Thank you to the 400 guests who joined us on 10 October at the fundraising Gala Dinner. The event was a huge success thanks to the commitment of the Gala Dinner team, led by Sarah Weldon. Thanks to everyone's hard work the evening raised a staggering £80,000 in support of the appeal.

Aug 2015: Over 60 guests attend the Music on a Summer's Evening event in Bedfordshire raising an impressive £1250 towards the appeal. Guests enjoyed live music by the The Quintet of Six, an Ensemble from The Woburn Sands Band. Thanks go to the 'Bedfordshire Committee' for all their hard work in making this event such a success and to the event hosts for kindly sharing their stunning garden.

Aug 2015:Thanks to a major grant pledged by the Kirby Laing Foundation the appeal reaches and exceeds £2 million  - a signficant milestone. The Laing Family Trusts have been long-standing supporters of the Cathedral and their support is greatly valued. We are nearing 70% of the £3 m target and all efforts are firmly focussed on securing the remaining funds. July 2015: Thanks to everyone who joined us at St Paul's Church, Bedford to hear about the Cathedral's development project. Special thanks go to St Paul's and to Colin Osborne, former High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, for making the event such a success.

June 2015: A host of angels greeted visitors in St Albans on 20 June as the Cathedral launched its public appeal 'Alban's Angels' in support of ‘Alban, Britain’s First Saint.’ Alban's Angels is an opportunity for individuals, schools, local churches, groups and clubs to support the Cathedra's plans for the future. An ‘Angel Cloud’ has been installed in the Cathedral, to be populated with a growing numbers of carved wooden angels as people sign up and support the fundraising scheme. The Archibishop of Canterbury joined Alban's Angels during his visit and Individuals can join for a donation of £25 or more, and will be acknowledged online. For each membership received, another angel will be added in that person’s name to the Angel Cloud, creating a truly unique and beautiful artistic feature in the Cathedral.

April 2015: Congregation member, Chistopher Hope, runs the London Marathon in an impressive 4 hours, 14 minutes and 49 seconds. Christopher’s efforts raised a staggering £12,950 - £4,600 towards Alban, Britain's First Saint, and £8,350 in support of  ‘Elizabeth’s Legacy of Hope,’ a charity which provides life-changing support for child amputees. March 2015: Local law firm Debenhams Ottaway has become the latest, 'Alban, Britain's First Saint' corporate sponsor. The firm has been a great supporter of the Cathedral over the past few years and their involvement in this project is greatly appreciated.

February 2015: We are delighted to announce that St Michael's Manor and Star Cargo Plc have become the first official corporate project sponsors. February 2015: Members of the Cathedral's congregations are invited to find out more about the project through a series of presentations given by the Dean and the Appeal Chair, Gerald Corbett. To find out moreclick here.

December 2014: Key members of the Project Team are appointed following a comprehensive procurement process. We look forward to working with; Project Architect- Simpson & Brown, Activity Consultant -Tricolor and Interpretation Consultant - Mather & Co. Working in conjunction with the previously appointed Project Manager, Cragg Management, the team will develop the project in the coming months prior to a public consultation in spring 2015.

October 2014: The Music in Bloom flower festival, which delighted over 10,000 visitors in September with stunning colour throughout the Cathedral, has raised £65,000 towards the Alban, Britain’s First Saint project. The four-day event was a huge success but only possible through the commitment of many. Our thanks go to the organising committee, sponsors and all those who contributed to its success.

September 2014: We are delighted to report that the Garfield Weston Foundation has generously pledged £300,000 to the Alban, Britain’s First Saint project. The Foundation’s pledge will significantly contribute towards the project’s success and is a wonderful endorsement of our project, thank you.

July 2014: The Friends of St Albans Cathedral have kindly agreed a donation of £75,000 to the project. Their support at this early stage adds momentum to the fundraising appeal and their ongoing commitment and support is greatly appreciated.

April 2014: The Heritage Lottery Fund have announced their round 1 pass of the Alban, Britain’s First Saint project! This is fantastic news for the Cathedral. The development grant awarded will help fund the 24 month development phase and enable the Cathedral to confirm its plans and develop a round 2 bid to bring the project to reality.
