St Albans Cathedral Enters Tourism Hall of Fame
St Albans Cathedral has entered the Trip Advisor Hall of Fame after being awarded its 5th successive Certificate of Excellence. The award celebrates excellence in hospitality and is given only to attractions that consistently achieve top rating reviews from visitors.
As well as a place of worship, the Cathedral is a busy tourism destination attracting 200,000 visitors per year from around the world. Many visitors comment on the free guided tours given daily which explain the significant role of the Cathedral in the nation’s history as the burial site of Britain’s first saint, Alban.
The Dean of St Albans Cathedral, the Very Rev’d Dr Jeffrey John, commented on the award, “We are all delighted to know that St Albans Cathedral has been included in the Trip Advisor Hall of Fame award. Welcoming people is in the DNA of the place, ever since Alban took in a fugitive priest 1700 years ago, and gave up his life for him. It is a real delight to have so many people coming to enjoy the atmosphere and beauty of the building and its setting, and to read on Trip Advisor how much it has meant to them. Thank you -and keep coming back!”
Currently undergoing significant development, St Albans Cathedral will be opening a new Welcome Centre in 2019, along with improved visitor access and facilities throughout the building. It hosts a huge range of events for all ages, including the unique Alban Pilgrimage every June - a spectacular city wide celebration as giant puppets take to the streets and retell the dramatic story of St Alban. There are regular children’s events in the school holidays with themed trails and craft activities, tower tours which take visitors through medieval passageways up to the top of the Norman Tower and concerts throughout the year.
