Make your Mark at St Albans Cathedral this summer with Artist in Residence Ella West
This August, St Albans Cathedral will be welcoming their very first Artist in Residence, Ella West. As part of the Cathedral’s Heritage Lottery funded project, Alban, Britain’s First Saint, Ella will be running a series of events and workshops for children and adults inspired by the magnificent designs and graffiti left over the centuries throughout the Cathedral.
A contemporary artist, Ella is creating a series of wax sculptures to go on display in the Cathedral, and is encouraging all ages to come along and make their mark, engraving a personal message which will form part of the sculptures. These free drop-in sessions take place throughout August.
There will also be two screen printing workshops aimed at children aged seven and over on Tuesday 7th and Tuesday 14th August when Ella will show children how screen printing is done and help them make their very own print to take home. It’s not just children who can learn a new skill, as there will also be an opportunity for adults to try their hand at screen printing in an intimate, candlelit workshop on Wednesday 15th August.
Speaking of her plans for her residency, Ella said “I am thrilled to be working in collaboration with St Albans Cathedral. I’ll be working with a diverse range of people to deliver workshops and create artworks which will be exhibited in the Cathedral. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with the local community, learn about the rich history of the Cathedral and respond to the unique architecture presented in this incredible site.”
Throughout her residency, Ella will explore the historic graffiti hidden around the Cathedral, some of which dates back to the sixteenth century.
Canon Chancellor at the Cathedral, Fr. Kevin Walton said “For many centuries, people have made their mark in this place and Ella is going to help us continue building on this living legacy. We very much look forward to welcoming many families and individuals to this fascinating and imaginative programme.”
