Sunday afternoon organ recital at St Albans Cathedral
On Sunday afternoon, 29th March at 3pm, Tom Winpenny, Assistant Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral, will give an organ recital on the Cathedral’s renowned Harrison & Harrison organ.
His programme includes the ‘Dorian’ Toccata & Fugue by JS Bach, the rarely-performed virtuosic Suite op. 39 by Marcel Dupré, and the monumental Grand Pièce Symphonique by another Parisian organist-composer, César Franck.
This is the first in this year’s series of occasional Sunday afternoon organ concerts at the Cathedral, and Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music, said ‘Organ music continues to play an integral part in the life of the Cathedral, and throughout the city through the biennial International Organ Festival. These Sunday recitals, given by the Cathedral’s resident organists, provide the opportunity to hear a full-length organ concert demonstrating the versatility of the Cathedral’s wonderfully restored organ in some of the greatest works of the organ repertoire.’
Recitals later this year are given by Andrew Lucas (Master of the Music, 16th August) and Michael Papadopoulos (Organ Scholar, 25th October).
The recital will last around 60 minutes, and a retiring collection will be taken towards the work of the Cathedral Music Department.
Admission free. Retiring collection. For further information: Cathedral Information Desk 01727 860780.
