St Albans Cathedral Announces Children’s Summer Programme

Thu, 17 July 2014

St Albans Cathedral is hosting a fascinating summer programme of children’s activities throughout the school holidays – including creative workshops based on the First World War and fun family trails exploring the moon and the stars!

With a busier programme than ever before, young visitors are invited to join the Cathedral’s award winning Education Centre to take part in a series of specialist arts and crafts workshops with a First World War theme.

Children will explore watercolours through Michael Foreman’s novel ‘War Games’; there will be puppet work inspired by the film and theatre productions of ‘War Horse’, and there’s a chance to discover ‘Trench Art’ using actual pieces of art crafted by soldiers during the war.

Steve Clarke, Education Officer at St Albans Cathedral, said, “The workshops are aimed at exploring different elements of the war in a fun and interactive way. Our last holiday workshop sessions all sold out, so hopefully these activities will capture the children’s imagination too. We look forward to welcoming young visitors throughout the summer holidays.’

The workshops are suitable for children aged between 7 and 11 years old and take place at selected times on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout August.  Tickets cost £7 and are available from the Cathedral Box Office on 01727 890290 or online at www.stalbanscathedral.org

In addition to the workshops, the Cathedral will be hosting FREE Family Discovery Mornings on Thursdays throughout August, suitable for all ages.  Families can pop in between 10.00 and 12.30 to enjoy themed trails around the building and a fun craft activity.  This year’s themes include ‘To Infinity and Beyond’, exploring the sun, moon and stars in the Cathedral, and ‘Blooming Marvellous’ which takes a closer look at plants and flowers in the run up to the Cathedral’s Flower Festival in September.

There is no need to book for the Family Discovery Mornings – just turn up and enjoy exploring.  For full dates and details go to www.stalbanscathedral.org or call 01727 890290.
