St Albans Cathedral Choir Balloon Race Floats a £3,000 Fundraiser
Tue, 2 July 2013
The St Albans Cathedral Choir helped float a spectacular balloon race on Saturday 22nd June (the day of the Alban Pilgrimage), when hundreds of balloons were released into the stormy June sky, as part of a race fundraiser.
Hundreds of colourful balloons were bought from friends and family of the choir, congregation, locals and visitors to the Cathedral, since the fundraising began on Easter Sunday. The result is a staggering £3,000 raised to support the choir funds on their next planned choir tour.
The choristers aged between 8 and 14 yrs old watched the balloon race start, after singing in the special Festival Evensong between 4-5pm. In 2009, when the choir last held a similar race, the furthest returned balloons travelled as far as the North Norfolk coast.
The prize fund for this special balloon race includes a First Prize of £100, £40 and £25 cash prizes, for the purchasers of the three balloons that travel the furthest. All the materials used, the balloons and the labels that are attached to them, are biodegradable.
Recently back from a 4 day tour to Loreto, Italy in the May half term holiday, the Cathedral Choir comprises of around 20 boys (the choristers) from various local schools including Abbey Primary, St Columba’s, Beaumont, Verulam, Fleetville, Marlborough, Westbrook Hay, Parmiters, St Nicholas, Harpenden and St Marys, Welwyn. A further dozen Lay Clerks join the choristers at weekend and special services, concerts and tours to make up to the full Cathedral Choir.
Over the years the choir has built up a renowned reputation with various radio and television broadcasts, has sung world premieres of major choral works, and has toured overseas on numerous occasions.
There are separate boys and girls choirs here at St Albans, the Cathedral Choir and the Abbey Girls Choir. Both receive first-class musical tuition, plus develop numerous other skills, experiences and friendships along the way.
