The Dean’s Lecture: Mark’s Gospel

Thu, 15 February 2018

Mark is the earliest gospel, the shortest and (deceptively) the simplest – and potentially the most interesting of all. It is the place to start if you are serious about understanding the gospels. How historical is it? Why does it have a weirdly abrupt ending, and no resurrection story or birth story? The pace is dramatic, as Jesus hurtles around Palestine performing miracles, throwing out demons, quarrelling with Pharisees – all expressed in short, piled-sentences and a breathless style. What was Mark really doing in creating this new genre – a ‘gospel’? Come and find out how much fascination is packed into this tiny, world-changing, life-changing document.
