Visions of Hell: the Art of the Last Things

Sat, 25 November 2017

In Christian art, images of fantastic demons inflicting bizarre torture on agonised and writhing sinners are both familiar and puzzling, even embarrassing. Are they just expressions of medieval superstition? Where do these pictures come from? What do they mean? What purpose were they intended to serve?

In this study day in preparation for Advent, a season traditionally focused on judgement and our ultimate destiny, these questions will be explored. Viewing the historical development of images of the Last Things, the day aims to open up fresh perspectives on Jesus and on the way in which we might think about God's Judgement today.
