The Story of Crete: A Microcosm of Europe Join Kenneth Padley as he explores 4000 years of Crete's culture, history, and influence within Europe. This hour-long talk will chart the successive fortunes of Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Venetians, Germans, and others, with particular reference to the evolution of religious and cultural characteristics. On Thursday 3rd February, 7.30 - 9pm, we will be delving into the fascinating history of Crete, questioning how this island is uniquely positioned to illustrate the major ideas, movements and events which have influenced Europe over the last four thousand years. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is a cross-roads between east and west, north and south. It has been witness to the rise and fall of numerous civilizations and has produced distinct religious and cultural characteristics. After considering these characteristics, this talk will conclude with a consideration of what Crete's history might say to the crises of identity in our own island as we survey the post-Brexit landscape. This talk will be held online via Zoom. If you'd like to attend the event but are not free to join us live, please do buy a ticket and you'll receive a link to the recording.
