The Rossettis: a New Way of Living

Discover more about the extraordinary Rossetti family.  

The Rossetti family were quite extraordinary.  When Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti was forced into exile through his opposition to the rule of the King of Naples, he arrived in Britain in 1824 and soon married the daughter of another Italian exile.  All four of the children of this marriage – Dante Gabriel, Christina, Maria and William – were to follow in his footsteps showing remarkable poetic and artistic talents. As founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the family's attitude to life, love and art reflected revolutionary sentiments of the time.

To coincide with the Tate Britain’s exhibition ‘The Rossettis’ (6 April – 24 September 2023), an exhibition devoted to the radical Rossetti generation, this Study Day will explore the family’s history and cultural impact, and take a look at some of the exciting exhibits which will be making up the Tate’s immersive exhibition.
