With the decline and eventual collapse of Byzantium, the authority for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine shifted to the Patriarchy of Moscow. This resulted in the Orthodox Church splitting over time into three separate Churches which have only recently been unified as an autocephalous Church – that is an Orthodox Church of Ukraine independent of any external, especially patriarchal, authority. This talk explores the history, art and architecture of the Ukrainian Church, especially in the light of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
