This summer’s Lives and Legacies exhibition in the Cathedral features an original copy of the Book of Benefactors, which lists the names of all those who gave gifts to the medieval St Albans Abbey, from popes and kings to quite ordinary folk.  In recognition of their generosity they were admitted to the Fraternity of the Friends. (See stalbanscathedral.org/a-history-of- the-friends for more detail.)  Since the re-founding of the Fraternity in 1949, modern Friends have been equally generous in their gifts, many of which are on view in today’s Cathedral.

On two evenings in the first week of August, Cathedral guides who are also members of today’s Friends will lead tours of the building to explore and celebrate this long tradition of giving.  They will trace the history of the medieval Fraternity, before moving around the Cathedral to look more closely at the many contributions made by modern Friends to the beauty of this very special place.
