A 5-week course which will help students to strengthen and develop their knowledge of the Latin language.

Latin was the language of learning in Europe for nearly two thousand years.  It still holds the key to many historic documents, inscriptions and mottos. Moreover, it provides the root for so much of the vocabulary of English, French, Italian and Spanish (amongst others).

Latin Beginners+ is a five week course aimed at adults.  It follows on from the fifteen weeks of beginners courses held over the last year.  Newcomers are welcome to this class if they have studied a little Latin in the past (even many years ago, at school) and the tutor would be happy to provide some resources to catch up in advance. Please contact  [email protected] in good time to receive catch-up information.

The course will be held in person* and will be based on Classical myths and the ever-popular Cambridge Latin Course with stories set in Roman Britain. We shall deepen our knowledge of noun cases and verb tenses with a focus on the meaning of the different word endings and will gain a picture of life in Roman Britain. We shall also read stories from the myths aloud in Latin.

*The course has so far been successfully held with all sessions being in person, but if circumstances dictate (e.g. a lockdown or storm) it may be necessary to hold sessions via Zoom – a very user-friendly way of holding sessions online.

When | Mondays 24 April - 12 June*, 7.30 - c.9pm

*The course does not take place on bank holidays - 1, 8, 29 May - but structured homework will be set where there is a gap to help bridge the weeks without a class.

Where | Alban Room, St Albans Cathedral

Cost | £60

Tutor | Clare Harvey, teacher of Latin and Classical Civilisation

**Please note spaces for this course are limited so we recommend booking early**
