One of the most finely illustrated medieval manuscripts, Matthew Paris’s Book of St Albans, was digitised by the Library of Trinity College Dublin for the first time in 2022. Join us as we meet the team behind this marvellous feat!

The thirteenth-century masterpiece features 54 individual works of medieval art and has fascinated readers across the centuries, from royalty to renaissance scholars. Created by the renowned scribe, the Benedictine monk Matthew Paris of St Albans Abbey, the manuscript chronicles the life of St Alban, the first Christian martyr in England. It also outlines the construction of St Albans Cathedral.

Meet the team behind the Manuscripts for Medieval Studies project at Trinity College Dublin and learn about the processes involved in getting medieval manuscripts online – from conservation and cataloguing, to digitisation and outreach. As well as Matthew Paris's work, you'll also get a glimpse into another important manuscript produced in medieval St Albans, the twelfth-century West Dereham Bible, which has also been digitised. Both can be viewed online at www.digitalcollections.tcd.ie

You'll find out what discoveries they made through these challenging projects, and explore some of the hidden or unexpected insights which the team made into these medieval manuscripts.
