St Albans High School for Girls & St Albans School

The Joint Schools’ Choral Society & Orchestra has been running for 52 years and encompasses pupils, parents, staff and friends from St Albans School and St Albans High School for Girls. We are delighted to be returning to St Albans Cathedral with this special programme to commemorate all those who have lost their lives due to Covid-19.

The first half of the concert begins with Haydn’s Symphony No.26, also known as the Lamentatione. This well-known symphony epitomises the Sturm und Drang style, characterised by its use of minor keys, dissonance and angular melodic writing. Following this will be Brahms’ anthem Geistliches Lied, originally scored for four-part choir with organ. The arrangement we will be performing is for choir and strings, arranged by Sir John Elliot Gardiner for the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra. This serene anthem features one of the most beautiful ‘Amen’ sections in choral music.

The second half of the concert features a piece which needs little introduction: Mozart’s Requiem in D minor. This is one of the most beloved pieces in the choral canon and features many wonderful movements, including the Lacrimosa. Although the Requiem remains one of Mozart’s most famous works, he wrote surprisingly little of it due to his untimely death at the age of 35, with much of it being completed by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr.

Do please join us to support our young musicians as they discover this wonderful music for the first time.
