Members of The Friends of St Albans Abbey and their guests are offered an exclusive opportunity to be the first to see our unique cathedral nave wall paintings as pilgrims in the Middle Ages may have known them.

Eight hundred years have taken a toll on the paintings. Now, for the first time, in a breathtaking light show, we can lift the veil of time and see how they may have looked in all their medieval glory.  Through the combination of the authorship of Dr M A Michael, the stunning photography of Angelo Hornak and the artistic talent of our illustrator Craig Williams, we will project these re-coloured images onto the nave wall paintings to transport us back in time.

This special evening will begin with a drinks reception at 6.00 pm in the new Welcome Centre, after which Dr Michael will give a talk in the nave and launch his new book on the wall paintings. Friends will then be treated to a demonstration of how these new images were created and brought to magnificent life using light projection.

This never-to-be-forgotten evening will round off in the Quire with a short candlelit service of Compline sung by the Fayrfax Consort. The evening will end at 9.00 pm.

We are hoping that this unique and exclusive event will encourage Friends to bring with them one or two guests who could become Friends too, so increasing our membership and supporting all the valuable work the Fraternity does.

Tickets for members of the Friends £20.00;  Friends’ Guest tickets £15.

Booking closes on 14th September.

NB. Dr Michael’s new book St Albans Cathedral Wall Paintings, price £10.00 and available in September, may be pre-ordered at the time of booking Illuminatio tickets.
