Celebrating the work of the Friends

Date: Saturday 16 May 2020

Time: 12.30pm

Buffet lunch, lecture and AGM in the Cathedral Chapter House

This year Friends’ Day returns to its traditional format, and also of course comes back to the refurbished Chapter House.  We start with a buffet lunch at 12.30pm in the basement Offa Room, then move up (by stairs or lift) to the Alban Room for a lecture at 1.45pm, followed by the AGM at 2.45pm and Choral Evensong in the Cathedral at 4.00pm.

We are delighted to be able to welcome Dr Emma Pomeroy to deliver the Friends’ Day lecture.  She is a Fellow of Newnham College, Cambridge, and an expert in osteo-archaeology – the analysis of bones uncovered in archaeological excavations, and what they reveal about the lives of those concerned.  She is currently advising on the project to create a digital reconstruction of the face of Abbot John of Wheathampstead, whose body was discovered in the excavation which preceded the building of the new Cathedral Welcome Centre, before he is reinterred.

Facial reconstruction is a distinctive and increasingly popular way of helping to engage visitors in past history, and to tell the stories of significant individuals within that history. This particular project is being sponsored by the Friends, rather appropriately because Abbot John, twice elected abbot in the 1400s, was a great promoter of membership of the original Fraternity of the Friends of St Albans Abbey.

Before returning to the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge earlier this year, Dr Pomeroy worked at Liverpool John Moores University, where the reconstruction is taking place.  She has also been involved in projects around the world, including South America, South Asia and continental Europe.

N.B.  Our buffet lunch is being catered by the Abbot’s Kitchen team.  Soft drinks will be provided, and tea/coffee.  Wine may be purchased separately on the day.  If you have any particular dietary requirements, please email details to [email protected] before the closing date.

£18 for buffet lunch and lecture.  Attendance at the AGM is free to all Friends.

Booking opens October 1st 2019.  Please apply before Friday May 1st 2020.
