AGM, lecture and afternoon tea in the Cathedral Chapter House

Saturday 13 May 2023 from 1.30pm

In a similar format to last year, the programme for Friends’ Day 2023 starts with the AGM at 1.30pm in the Alban Room, followed by the traditional Friends’ Day lecture, then afternoon tea in the Offa Room provided by the Abbot’s Kitchen, before Choral Evensong in the Cathedral at 5.00pm.

Lasting Letters – the work of the Cardoso Kindersley Workshop

Our guest speaker at Friends’ Day 2023 will be Lida Kindersley MBE, a lettercutter, typeface designer, author and publisher who runs the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge. She is considered the foremost lettercutter in the United Kingdom and is ‘dedicated to the increase of good lettering in the world’.  Her work in stone, wood, metal and other media includes carved memorials, plaques, inscriptions and sundials which can be seen at many public locations in the United Kingdom and beyond.  Most recently these include the inscription to commemorate the re-interment of Abbot John of Wheathampstead at St Albans Cathedral, a beautiful piece of work financed by the Friends.

Lida will talk about the achievements of her late husband David Kindersley, and how his philosophy of work lives on today.  She will give insight into the materials, equipment and techniques used.  But most of all she will show us wonderful examples of the Workshop's commissions, not just in St Albans but in other locations with which Friends may be familiar, such as London and Cambridge.  Many of these are illustrated in the range of publications which Lida has produced, including just this year Words Made Stone: The Craft and Philosophy of Letter Cutting.

All members are warmly invited to come and meet her in person, while celebrating the work of the Friends. For those unable to attend in person, both AGM and lecture will be accessible online via Zoom.

Please be sure to book a ticket before the end of Thursday 11 May, choosing one of the four options below.
