City Guides and Cathedral Guides Join Forces in St Albans

The City of St Albans Tour Guides and St Albans Cathedral Guides have joined forces to create a brand new tour – From Monastic to Market Town: A Tale of Power & Conflict.

The tour has been devised to offer group visitors a new experience which encompasses all the City’s major highlights in one go.

old-town-hallStarting at the Old Town Hall and finishing at the Shrine of Saint Alban inside the Cathedral, the Guides reveal fascinating facts and intriguing insights into the historical significance and social history of the City.  Who was Saint Alban?   What role did St Albans play in the Magna Carta?   Why is the Clock Tower a symbol of the Peasants’ Revolt?   And what exactly are the “Flesh Shambles”?

Chairman of the Cathedral Guides, Stephen Potter, said, “We are extremely pleased to be launching this unique tour for groups with the City Guides.  The Abbey and town of St Albans developed side by side for centuries – not always in harmony – but, since the Abbey became a Cathedral and the town became a City they have worked extremely well together.  This tour is a great example of that co-operation.”

The new tour is available now and is for private groups.
