Roman Festival at St Albans Cathedral

Do as the Romans Do at St Albans Cathedral

A Roman Festival takes place this week at St Albans Cathedral.  Key Stage 2 pupils from local schools will be exploring everyday life in Roman Times through drama and hands on activities.

Roman Governors, Slaves and Archaeologists will lead these special days with a programme of engaging and fun activities.  Using role play, the children travel back 2000 years to Roman Verulamium, where they re-enact the story of Alban – Britain’s first martyr.

Children are given the chance to prepare and sample dishes for a tasty and authentic cena or dinner party. They will also take part in a ‘blanket dig’ to discover and explore finds from modern times back to the Romans and beyond, using genuine artefacts over 2000 years old.

Annette Cranston, Education Officer at St Albans Cathedral, said, “The Education Centre here at St Albans Cathedral is delighted to be hosting The Roman Festival again this year. This unique event enables pupils to develop a greater understanding of life in Roman Britain."

Canon Kevin Walton said, “It is always good to see so many school children enjoying themselves here whilst learning about their historical and religious heritage.”

The Roman Festival takes place on 22nd, 23rd, 26th and 28th September 2011.
