The Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban
Two rather intimidating Roman Executioners have arrived at St Albans Cathedral.
The 12-foot tall puppets made sure they were in good time for their key role in the Alban Pilgrimage which takes place on Saturday 18th June at 10.30am. The Pilgrimage retells the dramatic and moving story of Saint Alban, patron of the City and Britain’s first martyr.
Together with Roman chariots, soldiers, roses, angels and monks, the giant executioners will lead Saint Alban through Verulamium Park up to St Albans Cathedral where he is executed. Historical accounts claim that the executioner’s eyes pop out when Alban is put to death – a detail not missed on these new puppets.
They were created by carnival specialists Mahogany. A team of eight people worked on each figure ensuring every detail was accurate – from their helmets and swords to the dirt under their nails!
Canon Kevin Walton said ‘We are extremely pleased with the new puppets and they will certainly add to the drama on the day. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this unique and colourful event.’
The Alban Pilgrimage starts at 10.30 in Roman Verulamium. After the procession, families can enjoy fun and games at The Roman Quest which starts at 11.30 outside the Cathedral.
