St Albans Cathedral Music Trust launches 'St Albans Young Musicians 2012' competition

youngmusicianSchool children living in the St Albans area are being encouraged to take part in a prestigious new music competition ‘St Albans Young Musicians 2012’ being promoted and hosted by the St Albans Cathedral Music Trust.

The competition, which will be launched at a drinks reception on the 17th May in the Cathedral, already has the backing of The Heads of Music at Beaumont School, Abbey Primary School and St Albans Boys School who have committed to supporting what will be a high profile community competition.

Commenting on the launch of the competition Gerald Corbett, Chairman of the St Albans Cathedral Music Trust stated: “This competition is a great way to engage the younger local community in both music and heritage. The competition is designed to be fun whilst rewarding some of our most talented local musicians. We very much look forward to listening to the entries later this year.”

Both Primary and Secondary school students can enter under a range of categories. To enter the competition, students are invited to submit a CD recording of their chosen performance by Friday 15th October. CD entries will be shortlisted by a panel of high profile judges who will be announced in the coming weeks. Shortlisted students will then perform at a finals competition which takes place on Sunday 1st April at The Weston Auditorium, de Havilland Campus at the University of Hertfordshire.

The winners of each category will be invited to perform at a prestigious ‘Musical Gala Dinner’ in the Cathedral which takes place on 5th May 2012 to raise funds for the Music Trust. Winners will also be awarded a £100 cash prize.
