EYFS Teacher’s Conference

On Friday 29th June 2012, St Albans Cathedral Education Centre will be holding a special day of exploration, specifically designed for teachers in the Foundation Stage. This day is designed to illustrate how the Cathedral could be used as the inspiration to teach across a number of different curriculum areas.

Following consultation with local schools new trails have been developed to compliment the recently published EYFS Strategy. There will also be a focus on thematic learning.

The conference day will incorporate a look at existing trails and the newly developed trails. There will be opportunities to trial practical creative activities including printing and clay work.

Additionally, we will be focussing on using the Cathedral for practical maths activities including exploring shape and using non-standard measures.

Jubilee Trail

Since the late 8th Century, St Albans Cathedral has had a tumultuous relationship with the Royal family, including the setting up and destruction of the monastery, and the conversion of the Lady Chapel into a school! By exploring the building and using role play the children will discover how King Offa, King Henry VIII, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II have all affected events in the Cathedral through their life and actions. Running this half term and suitable for children in Key Stages 2, as part of the trail the children will also consider how the ruling power of the Monarchy has changed over the last 1200 years.

For more information about this exciting trail or to book a place, please call the Education Centre on 01727 890212.

Criminal Justice Conference

On Thursday 2nd February St Albans Cathedral Education Centre together with the Penal Affairs Group of the Diocese of St Albans, hosted its first Criminal Justice Conference. Sixth Form Conference

St Albans Cathedral Education Centre hosts a Sixth Form Conference in the Nave of the Cathedral every November. This free event is now in its 10th year and is a unique opportunity to enable students to debate with a platform of speakers across a diverse range of subjects. It is seen as making an invaluable contribution to the post 16 Citizenship curriculum.

The format is based upon the BBC programme 'Question Time' and allows students the opportunity to ask ethical, political and global questions of themselves and others in order to make value judgements.

Last years Sixth Form Conference was held on Thursday 24th November, with a  panel comprising of: His Honour Judge Andrew Bright QC, Resident Judge St Albans Crown Court; The Reverend Dr Giles Fraser, Canon Chancellor at St. Pauls Cathedral; Tobias Ellwood, Conservative MP for Bournemouth East and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Defence Secretary; Chris Bryant, Labour MP for Rhondda; Sandy Walkington, Liberal Democrat Candidate for St Albans. Once again the panel was chaired by the award winning journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed.
