About the trust

The St Albans Cathedral Trust was founded in 1978 as a charity (Registered Charity No. 1037405) to raise money for the restoration and renewal of the fabric of the Cathedral.

The Trust has raised funds to:

  • commission the casting of 13 new bells which were consecrated at the Abbey on 4th September 2010 following four decades of planning and fundraising
  • restore the Nave of the Cathedral (Phase 1)
  • build a new Chapter House alongside the Cathedral
  • restore the historic Shrine of St Alban

It now needs to find the money to complete the Nave refurbishment (Phase 2), and to fund the programme of conservation and re-ordering as detailed in the Architect's Quinquennial Report.

Projects

Particular projects include:

  • conservation and re-ordering of the West End and aisles of the Nave
  • completing the Nave project, to include new/improved lighting, storage etc
  • West End external stonework conservation and guttering repairs
  • West End security gates, lighting and signage
  • priority glazing repairs
  • Retroquire stonework cleaning and lighting
  • new access ramps in ambulatories
  • repairs and cleaning to Presbytery clerestory windows and stonework
  • permanent sanctuary extension
  • re-tiling roofs: Presbytery, north and south Nave aisles and Transepts

This is just a part of a long list of work that should be scheduled over the next 5 years.

The Trustees believe strongly that the expenditure is worthwhile in order to preserve one of England's great cathedral buildings - as:

  • a place of worship
  • a place of pilgrimage
  • an important part of the country's Christian heritage.
