The Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban

The Abbey Church of St Alban, built of RECYCLED materials, is an ideal place to promote sustainable living!
Our Christian values compel us to love one another and care for the earth. The Abbey’s history on this hill, site of the first Christian martyrdom, inspires us to put these into practice.
Join the Abbey community as we seek to understand and expand an ecological routine, at home, and in the cathedral.
Our Grassroots (environmental) group is committed to reducing the Abbey’s collective carbon footprint. Our first project has been to recycle paper, glass, plastic drinks bottles, cans, juice cartons, flower waste and cardboard. We are trying to raise congregational awareness of other green issues through articles in Abbey News, bulletin board updates, and regular contact with Abbey groups.
1. We added cardboard to our recycling activity.
2. Soon to conduct an energy audit of the Abbey and staff residences.
3. Educate (bulletin boards; Abbey News; intercessions).
4. Link with LSP (Local Strategic Partnership in the town council).
5. Participation in Friends of Verulamium Park's annual 'litter pick'.
6. Abbey Youth, Abbey staff, and congregation were offered the loan of electricity monitors, one way to learn how to use energy more efficiently.
7. World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour March ’11 ( to raise awareness about climate change).
The term ‘sustainable’ originated in 1987.
What does it mean, to us in St Albans Cathedral, 23 years later, to consider the health of our earth and its inhabitants?
Be bold, like St Alban, and stand for the truth!
The 8 Millenium Development Goals (environmental sustainability is #7) were developed in 2000 to mobilize concern for the poor/vulnerable. Will our global community accomplish the United Nations’ initial aim of combating these priorities by 2015?
The UK Environment Agency asked leading environmentalists 50 things that really could save the planet...
“religious leaders must make the planet their priority”.
