Cathedral Community

St Albans Cathedral is known locally as 'the Abbey'. People refer to the Abbey with affection and a real sense of ownership. This is made most obvious in the vibrancy of the Abbey Community. The Abbey Community is made up of congregation members, staff and volunteers. All are welcome.

This has been a place of Christian worship for over 1700 years, and this living tradition of worship remains central to the life of the Cathedral today. Our common life is rooted in the daily offering of Morning Prayer, Evensong and the Eucharist. Through this worship - from the stillness of an early morning service at the Shrine, to the vibrancy of the Parish Eucharist or the beauty of a Choral Evensong -we seek to respond to the God who in Jesus Christ has already reached out to find us.

The Abbey is primarily a community of worship from which springs a wide range of activities. St Albans is a 'parish church cathedral', functioning as both a cathedral for the Bishop and Diocese and in the familiar sense as a parish community. The Sub Dean is responsible for the life of the cathedral congregations.

All are welcome at Cathedral services

If you are a newcomer just come along and please introduce yourself to a Welcomer or a member of the clergy. If you are interested in finding out more about the Abbey, or want to get involved, please complete a Newcomer form (available on the table in the South Transept near the bookstall). We regularly invite all Newcomers to tea at the Abbey.

Those using a hearing aid may turn to the T position to access the loop system in the Nave and the Crossing. There are large print service books available on request.

All areas of the Abbey where worship takes place can be accessed by wheelchair. If you need help please speak to a steward who will be glad to assist you. All information regarding services here can be found on our Worship & Music page.

Baptised children are welcome to receive Holy Communion after preparation. Please speak to the clergy to find out more. For further information regarding Baptism and Confirmation, please click here.

How you can help

Support the work of Cathedral

The Cathedral relies heavily on donations both from those who come to St Albans and from those who are unable to visit us in person.

If you would like to make a donation to support the work of the Cathedral please print, complete and return the donation form. Unless you specify otherwise this money will be used to help cover the general day to day expenses of running and maintaining the Cathedral.
